Pohang Steelers 2 - 2 Daejeon Citizen

By Liam Birch at Pohang Steelyard Stadium

Daejeon Citizen almost brought Pohang Steelers impressive unbeaten K-League run to an end on Sunday, only to be denied by a last gasp equalizer from the hosts.

Daejeon were twice ahead in this encounter and looked like taking a very unlikely three points, however, Pohang's intricate passing and the constant threat of their forward line ultimately ensured that the Steelers retain their unbeaten record.

Pohang, fielding two ex-Daejeon favourites in Kim Hyeong Il and Denilson, looked to have taken the lead after just two minutes. A cross from the left wasn't dealt with by the Citizen defence and the ball was bundled home by the Pohang attacker. The hosts' celebrations were short lived however as the linesman on the far side had ruled the goal offside.

Daejeon may well have expected ongoing pressure from Pohang but it was in fact Daejeon who took the lead on 13 minutes. Brazilian Ale, playing in place of the suspended Stevan Racic, played a beautiful ball into the box from the left which was met by the head of the totally unmarked Park Sung-Ho to give Daejeon a shock lead.

The pace of former Citizen striker Denilson, now 33, was causing all sorts of problems for the Daejeon back line and he almost levelled soon after. He was played in by a long ball and used his pace to get past the defender before shooting on the half volley. Luckily for Citizen however, trusty goalkeeper Choi Eun Sung managed to tip the ball around the near post.

Pohang again came close midway through the first half with an effort that free-kick specialist Ko Chang-Hyeon would have been proud of. Again, luckily for Citizen, with Choi well beaten, the ball flew back off the right hand post. Choi was called into action once again moments later as Denilson found himself free of the last defender, only to see his effort superbly stopped by the legs of the veteran goalkeeper.

Pohang did get the equalizer that they probably just about deserved just before the stroke of half time. Daejeon will be concerned that the Pohang attacker was left completely unmarked to head home and level up the scores.

Still, Daejeon fans went for the half time break more than satisfied and they had plenty to cheer about in the second half too.

Daejeon fans were particularly expectant about the substitute arrival of Ko Chang Hyeon and it took only minutes for him to deliver. His free kick from far out on the left hand side caused havoc in the Pohang defence, missing everyone only to be palmed away by the goalkeeper onto the diving head of the onrushing Daejeon midfielder who headed home to regain the lead for Citizen.

Daejeon supporters were ecstatic at once again shocking the hosts and they continued to defend bravely. Particularly, a last gasp clearance off the line when Choi was beaten denied Kim Hyeong Il a goal against his former club.

Brazilian Valber, who has been the best performer for Daejeon in recent weeks will be having nightmares however at his glaring miss that would have sealed the three points for Citizen. Ko Chang Hyeon's cross from the right left Valber completely unmarked only 6 yards out but he somehow managed to fire his effort wide of the post. It was agonizing for the travelling supporters and would be more so given Pohang's late equalizer.

Daejeon had defended so well but they were again outdone by a set piece that wasn't properly dealt with. A Pohang corner wasn't dealt with again and the header out fell onto the boot of the Pohang forward who fired home his second of the game to break Daejeon hearts.

Daejeon can be very proud of their display and by comments made in the local media, they pulled off a shock by even getting a draw. Daejeon now have a break next week until they continue their push for a playoff place against Jeju the following week.

Daejeon Citizen 0 -2 Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors

by Liam Birch at Daejeon World Cup Stadium

Daejeon put up a valiant effort against high flying Jeonbuk before falling to two second half goals from Lee Dong-Guk and former Citizen favourite Brasilia.

Daejeon, riding on the back of two excellent victories over Ulsan and Seongnam, started brightly. Stevan Racic, who impressed in the game at Seongnam was partnering Park Sung-Ho in attack with Valber playing just behind. Key man Ko Chang-Hyeon was missing through suspension however Daejeon didn't seem to be missing him as they took the game to Jeonbuk.

In fact, it was Daejeon who created the first real chance of the game. A cross from the right was only headed up by the Jeonbuk defender straight into the path of Stevan Racic, who from 6 yards out, should have buried his header. Instead, his header was too close to the keeper who produced a decent save to tip it around the post.

Valber was instrumental in the midfielder and had two long range efforts test the Jeonbuk keeper. The first, fired just past the post whilst the second forced the save from the grateful Jeonbuk keeper.

Daejeon almost took the lead from a free kick that Racic initially looked like firing but instead left it to Kwon Jib who curled the ball over the wall but saw his effort well saved by the Jeonbuk keeper.

Jeonbuk only really threatened briefly during a first half completely dominated by Citizen. Choi Eun Song had very little to do in the Daejeon goal. At the opposite end however, the Jeonbuk keeper was having a great game. Daejeon came close again towards the end of the half when Valber produced a beautiful touch to break through the Jeonbuk midfield before angling in a teasing cross which Racic should have anticipated better.

There was still time for Daejeon to produce one more save from the Jeonbuk keeper as just before half time, the ball fell to Park Sung-Ho on the near post who powered a half volley towards the top corner which the keeper did amazingly well not just to save but to hold.

Hopes were high amongst the Citizen supporters at half time but danger signs were evident from the restart. Jeonbuk punted a long ball from midfield that sailed over the Daejeon defenders and was somehow volleyed over the bar by the Jeonbuk attacker.

Citizen were denied a clear penalty kick just before the hour mark when, after after initially shooting straight at the Jeonbuk goalkeeper, the Daejeon forward was clearly pulled down by the Jeonbuk defender. Somewhat bizarrely, the referee gave the foul in favour of Jeonbuk and Daejeon were denied what looked a stonewall penalty.

Soon after, Daejeon almost fell behind. Jeonbuk attacked down the right before threading the ball through to Lee Dong-Guk on the edge of the area who beautifully chipped the ball over Choi, only to see his effort bounce back off the bar and into the hands of the grateful Choi.

Not to be outdone, Daejeon would also hit the woodwork. A delightful interchange in midfield led to substitute Ale running clear on goal, only to see his effort brilliantly saved by the Jeonbuk keeper onto the post. It was agonisingly close and had the keeper not been having the game of his life, Citizen would have taken the lead.

Alas, it was Jeonbuk who finally broke the deadlock. A break from midfield left the Daejeon defence exposed. A delightful cross from the right found Lee Dong-Guk who expertly chested the ball down before smashing it into the top left corner.

From then out, there was only going to be one winner, with Choi Eun Song making a number of impressive saves. That said, Brazilian Ale again staked his claim for a place in the starting eleven with an excellent strike from the edge of the area that was again saved brilliantly by the Jeonbuk number one.

The final goal came soon after. Former Daejeon forward Brasilia was allowed acres of space to come 40 yards unchallenged before unleashing a thunderbolt into the top left corner, giving Choi absolutely no chance.

Daejeon can be pleased with the way that they performed against one of the top sides in the league. However, it was a game that showed that in the K-League, a pair of top class strikers can easily make the difference between mid-table and championship contenders. Since the departures of Denilson, Chuva and Brasilia almost two years ago, Daejeon have failed to bring in that sort of talent in forward positions. A win on Sunday at Pohang is now vital if Daejeon are to make anything of this season.

Seongnam Ilhwa 1 - 2 Daejeon Citizen

by Liam Birch at Seongnam Moran Stadium

Daejeon Citizen produced an assured display to register an impressive win over multi-time K-League champions Seongnam on Sunday.

The game, played on the same day as the funeral for former president Kim Dae-Jung, had a largely subdued atmosphere, enhanced by both sets of fans agreeing to not cheer during the first half. The atmosphere seemed to translate on to the pitch, with very few notable efforts from either side. Daejeon, coming off the back of victory over Ulsan, looked comfortable with anything the Seongnam attack threw at them. Seongnam looked sloppy from open play, and rarely threatened from set pieces, particularly against a strong and confident Daejeon defence which dealt with corners and free kicks with ease.

The crowd were awoken from their slumber when on 37 minutes, Kim Han Seob was fed in by a delightful through ball and calmly side footed past the Seongnam keeper. It was no more than Daejeon deserved after a composed first 45 minutes.

As the second half began, and the noise level was raised from the fans, so too the pace of the game quickened. Daejeon again looked dangerous on the break with Seongnam seemingly happy to play the long ball game. The key moment came just before the hour mark when Daejeon won a free kick in a dangerous area. All eyes turned to the sidelines as Ko Chang-Hyeon made his long awaited return from injury. With his first touch of the game, he curled a superb free kick over the Seongnam wall and into the net for his 9th goal of the season. Citizen fans are quickly running out of superlatives to describe this man's free kicks.

Just as things looked comfortable for Citizen, true to form, they conceded just three minutes later from a looping header by Seongnam's Cho. Far from the onslaught expected however, Daejeon regained composure to see out the game and register back to back victories. Much credit must be given to manager Wang Seon Jae who has turned Daejeon from basement boys to real challengers for the playoffs.

Daejeon will look to make it three wins in three at home against Jeonbuk next Sunday.

Daejeon Citizen 1 - 0 Ulsan Horang-i

by Liam Birch at Daejeon World Cup Stadium

Daejeon Citizen scored a dramatic late goal to register their first victory over Ulsan for five years on Saturday.

In a game where Daejeon created few clear cut chances, it took a moment of skill from defender Hwang Ji-Yoon from an 87th minute corner to take all three points. Ulsan, themselves having a sub-par season, will feel that they did at least enough to come away with a point from the Purple Arena, and perhaps should have, given the chances they created.

Daejeon had veteran goalkeeper Choi Eun Song to thank for a string excellent saves which highlighted that at the age of 38, he is still one of the most important players in the squad. He was first called into action midway in the first half where an Ulsan through ball left the striker in a one-on-one situation, which Choi did excellently to save with his trailing leg.

Daejeon were mostly restricted to long-range efforts, first from the returning Valber, whose grass-cutting effort was easily saved by the Ulsan keeper, a man who has a lot of previous history with the Citizen fans following his antics in the 2007 playoff game.

Woo Sung-Je, ever lively in attack almost tested the Ulsan keeper towards the end of the half. Cutting inside from the right, his attempted curler into the top right hand corner sailed just over the bar. The fact that this attempt was one of the highlights of the half is testament to the lack of chances created by either side in the first period.

The second half was more of the same, with Ulsan definitely looking the more threatening. Park Sung-Ho toiled away up front, but with just five goals to his name this season, he was never in danger of adding to that tally.

Ulsan however, looked a far more dangerous prospect with former Daejeon man Kim Young-Tae causing problems down the right. It was his cross that almost resulted in a goal. Fortunately for Daejeon, the resulting header looped over the bar.

Daejeon needed to change things around and the introduction of Racic provided just that. It was Racic that won a free kick on the edge of the area after being jumped over by the Ulsan defender. Racic picked himself up before firing a thunderous drive that deflected off the wall and out for a Daejeon corner.

From the resulting corner, Hwang Ji-Yoon put Daejeon ahead. The low corner didn't look like beating the far post until Hwang volleyed home on 87 minutes.

There was still time for Ulsan to almost equalize twice however. First, a header back across Choi's goal was excellently stopped by the keeper. As Ulsan launched a final assault, panic ensued in the area until the ball ran to the Ulsan striker who found himself through on goal. Fortunately for Citizen, Choi dived at his feet to smother the ball in injury time to ensure Daejeon picked up their fourth win of the season.

Bore Draw as Gyeongnam hold Daejeon

by Liam Birch at Daejeon World Cup Stadium

An incredibly frustrating game ended in a goalless draw as Gyeongnam held Daejeon at home this last Saturday. In one of the worst games in the history of football, neither side created anything of note in what was a truly dire affair.

Temporary coach Wang gave a first start to Serbian forward Racic, who partnered Park Sung-Ho in the Daejeon attack. This move clearly backfired however, as both players struggled with lack of pace and creative flair.

Daejeon are still without Valber and Ko Chang Hyeon, and it is no coincidence that Citizen have failed to score in the two matches they have missed. It is unlikely that either will feature for the trip to basement club Daegu on Saturday, who will see the game as the ideal opportunity to register only their second win of the season.

The travelling Citizen fans will hope for much better than the diabolical display they saw on Saturday.

Report: Suwon Bluewings 1 - 0 Daejeon Citizen

by Liam Birch at Suwon World Cup Stadium.

Daejeon Citizen produced a stubborn display in rain soaked Suwon on Saturday evening but were unable to prevent the reigning K-League champions from taking all three points.

Despite having the lions share of possession, and limiting Suwon to few opportunities, Daejeon were unable to break down a resolute Suwon defence. In truth, Citizen, without the creativity of Ko Chang Hyeon and long-term absentee Valber, never really looked likely to draw level after falling behind early on.

Daejeon started brightly, buoyed on by a large away following for what is traditionally the biggest derby game of the year. The cheers soon turned to groans of despair however, as Suwon took an early lead.

As Daejeon piled forward, a misplaced pass allowed Suwon to launch a superb flowing attack that left the Citizen defence in disarray. Daejeon barely knew what was happening as Suwon quickly sprayed the ball from right to left before firing a deflected shot past Choi Eun Song and into the net. It was a huge blow, coming after only eleven minutes, but Daejeon showed resilience to come back into the game.

Daejeon, attacking almost exclusively down the left hand side, rarely seriously threatened however. Surprise inclusion Kwon Jib fired a volley harmlessly over the bar following a Daejeon corner before the same player, again from a corner, almost got Daejeon level. A tame defensive header fell to Kwon Jib on the edge of the area. His half volley seemed destined for the top corner, but agonisingly drifted just inches over the bar.

Much maligned striker Park Sung Ho was toiling away as the lone striker, and he will think that he should have equalized. A deep ball from Woo Sung Je confused the Suwon defence and left Park alone in the area. His glancing header looped over the Suwon keeper and unfortunately for Daejeon, over the bar.

It would be more of the same in the second half, with Daejeon keeper Choi having very little to do.

As the rain poured down, Daejeon reasserted their dominance from the first half. New signing Stevan Racic was introduced around the hour mark and he immediately started making a nuisance of himself around the Suwon defence. He first won a freekick around the edge of the area that was crying out for Ko Chang Hyeon. Unfortunately, in his absence, the effort was hit tamely at the grateful Suwon keeper.

Tame would most definitely not be the word to describe Racic's thunderous free kick that followed. Lee Je Kyu won a free kick on the edge of the area, before Racic hit a powerful strike that the Suwon keeper could only deflect away. If Daejeon attackers had only anticipated the spill, they could have equalized. Unfortunately, no one reacted and Suwon cleared easily away.

Overall, it was a good performance from Daejeon, and had the missing players been included, it could well have been a different story. Daejeon will feel confident that they can get back to winning ways against out of form Gyeongnam in Daejeon next Sunday.

Report: Daejeon Citizen 2 - 2 Gangwon FC

by Liam Birch at Daejeon World Cup Stadium

An excellent second half comeback from Daejeon stunned Gangwon as Citizen came from two goals down to salvage a draw at the Purple Arena. In truth, Daejeon will feel that they could and perhaps should have taken all three points in this entertaining encounter.

Daejeon got off to the worst possible start by falling behind after just two minutes. Gangwon too easily found space on the left and a low ball across the Daejeon area met Kim Han Sop, who could only divert the ball into the empty Daejeon net, much to the delight of Gangwons sizable following.

It was a poor start, however Daejeon recovered to again control the midfield battle. Whilst Gangwon were keen to exploit Daejeon's fragile wide defenders, Lee Seon Woo and Kwon Jib in particular were starting to dominate the centre of the park. Daejeon again played Park Sung Ho as the lone forward with the returning Ko Chang Hyeon and Woo Sung Je either side in support.

It was Ko Chang Hyeon who, teed up by the excellent Kwon Jib, really should have done better from inside the eighteen yard area. Perhaps Kwon Jib should have been more selfish as he was certainly in a better position to get a shot away than Ko.

Midway through the half, Daejeon should have levelled. A deep cross from Woo Sung Je was missed by everyone, including Park Sung Ho who should have buried the golden opportunity. Instead, the ball bounced in the six yard area before bouncing back off the corner of post and bar. Even the slightest touch from Park would have resulted in a goal, however it wasn't to be.

Just as Daejeon were pushing for an equalizer, disaster struck. Somehow, a Gangwon forward found himself free of the Daejeon defence before calmly rounding Choi Eun Song and sliding the ball into an empty net. It was a severe blow for Citizen just as the first half was drawing to a close.

After the disastrous first half, Daejeon needed to start brightly, and they did. Numerous headed attempts were wasted, until a goal of the season contender from veteran Lee Seon Woo got Daejeon back in the game on 57 minutes. A cross from deep was headed away by the Gangwon defender and onto the boot of Lee, who unleashed an unstoppable volley from all of twenty five yards that almost burst the top left hand corner of the goal.

Soon after the goal, Stevan Racic came on for his debut and was soon in the thick of the action. In truth, he should have scored with almost his first touch of the game. Unfortunately for Citizen, his tame free-header sailed harmlessly wide of the goal.

Daejeon didn't have to wait much longer though, as top-scorer Ko Chang Hyeon fired Daejeon level. Cutting in from the right, his powerful effort spilled under the keeper and into the bottom left corner.

The comeback was on and from then out it was a constant barrage against the Gangwon goal. First, with just minutes remaining, Racic turned inside the area before placing a shot straight against the right hand post. The Serbian looked clearly frustrated but more drama was to follow. Man of the moment, Lee Je Kyu thought he had won it for Daejeon on 90 minutes. A through ball was superbly chipped over the keeper and into the net by Lee. Agonisingly, the effort was ruled out for offside.

Overall, Daejeon can be very pleased with the way that they fought back from the dead after the break. This is a decent side now, and the addition of Racic should give Park Sung Ho some much needed competition up front.

Report: Daejeon Citizen 1 - 0 Chunnam Dragons

by Liam Birch at Daejeon World Cup Stadium

A dire affair at the Purple Arena on Saturday ended triumphantly as substitute Lee Je-Kyu fired Daejeon to a late victory over Chunnam Dragons.

In a dreadfully poor game, Daejeon, without influential play maker Valber and leading scorer Ko Chang-Hyeon, never looked like troubling the visitors in the early going. Indeed, in a game of very few chances, the one positive that Daejeon can take is that they bossed the midfield, with Kwon Jib and Lee Song-Un being particularly solid.

The game also saw the return of ex-Daejeon favourite Shuva, who has been heavily linked to a move back to Citizen this summer. It was the Brazilian who should have given Chunnam the lead midway through the first half. With his height a constant threat to the Daejeon defence, he really should have buried his free header. A cross from the left was met by the leaping Shuva who's header fortunately sailed past Choi Eun-Song's right hand post.

It was one of the only notable attempts in a first half that Daejeon dominated without challenging the Chunnam keeper. Park Sung-Ho had numerous weak efforts lamely roll wide and without the creativity of Valber or the dead-ball specialist Ko, it was difficult to see where the breakthrough would come.

As the second half began, Daejeon had several long-range attempts which again, barely troubled Yom Dong-Kyun in the Chunnam goal. Most notably, Woo Song-Je, who looks revitalized following the departure of Kim Ho, had several attempts sail harmlessly wide.

Chunnam rarely troubled Choi in the Daejeon goal as the game was becoming a stalemate in the middle of the park. And just as the game entered it's 90th minute, Daejeon struck.

A ball into the area from the left found Lee Je-Kyu who turned his man before firing expertly into the far right corner. It was a goal that Daejeon probably deserved based on their midfield dominance, but it came as a shock nonetheless.

Cue wild celebrations in the south stand as Daejeon moved to five games unbeaten and up to 12th in the K-League. Daejeon have one more home game remaining before travelling to Suwon away on the 19th, by which time, if results go their way, could be just two points from the playoff positions. Who would have thought that could be possible just a few weeks ago?

Report: Dominant Daejeon Pegged Back at the Last

Daejeon Citizen 1 - 1 Incheon Utd
by Liam Birch at Daejeon World Cup Stadium

Daejeon began life after Kim Ho with an impressive performance against high-flying Incheon at the Purple Arena on Saturday. After a week of turmoil, Citizen produced one of their best displays of the season and were unfortunate to be denied a deserved victory.

After losing both their head coach and club chairman during the week, one might have expected a disjointed performance from Citizen. However, what followed was an excellent display that but for wasteful finishing and poor officiating, should have resulted in victory.

Daejeon started brightly from the off and were denied a clear penalty in the 14th minute. The excellent Ko Chang Hyeon dribbled his way into the area, only to be tripped by the Incheon defender. Amazingly, both the referee and his assistant failed to notice the infringement and play resumed. Just 3 minutes later, Daejeon had another penalty claim turned down that although not as clear cut as the first, was still a poor decision.

An unbelievable miss followed and it's one that Brazilian Valber won't want to see again in a hurry. An excellent cross from the left found Valber unmarked, 6 yards out and no goalkeeper in sight. Somehow, he headed the ball down onto the ground and over the bar. It was quite shocking and completely out of character from one of Daejeon's most gifted players.

Daejeon were the clearly dominant team and Incheon did little to trouble Choi Eun-Song, making his 410th appearance in the Daejeon goal. Even Park Sung-Ho was having a decent game in attack, holding up the ball well and linking up with the wingers. For all their possession however, Citizen created few real chances and it was no surprise to see a goalless first half.

Whatever the Incheon boss said at half time clearly worked as Utd came out flying. Playing with much more purpose, they still failed to trouble Choi in the Daejeon goal, though their possession play was frustrating Daejeon. More worrying was the injury that forced play maker Valber to withdraw around the hour mark. Initial reports are that the injury isn't as bad as first feared, however the player will have a scan this week and is expected to miss at least 2 weeks.

With the game headed for a 0-0 draw, Ko Chang Hyeon provided another piece of magic to send the home crowd into raptures. Winning a free kick 30 yards out, Ko Chang-Hyeon fired a pin-perfect effort into the top right of the Incheon keeper's goal, giving him no chance. It was another superlative free kick from Ko, who simply must be knocking on the door of the national team with another outstanding performance.

With Daejeon seemingly in control, disaster struck in the 89th minute. A routine high ball caused panic in the Daejeon defence. Hwang Ji-Yoon, who was having a solid game, attempted a suicidal head back to the keeper which was duly intercepted by the Incheon striker who collided with Choi before watching the ball roll into the empty net. Confusion reigned as the referee and assistant seemed to debate whether the goal would stand, although unfortunately for Daejeon, it did.

A game in which Citizen showed such promise was unfortunately ended with a feeling of disappointment. Daejeon can most certainly take pride in the way that they played and will know that they should have taken all three points. An FA Cup tie against minnows Gyeonghee University should put Daejeon back on winning ways however. They must now also focus on attracting a new coach, which could take a while considering their meagre resources and poor position in the K-League.

Report: Daejeon Citizen 3 - 2 Busan I'Park

by Liam Birch at Daejeon World Cup Stadium

Two goals from Park Sung-Ho against his former club Busan helped Daejeon on their way to a vital victory as the K-League resumed after international break. On a night where few fans ventured out to the rain-soaked stadium, Daejeon produced a fine attacking display to see off a Busan team who were enjoying a decent run of form.

The visitors, who found themselves at the upper echelons of the league at the start of play, looked tentative in the early going and paid the price. Daejeon took the lead on 11 minutes. Ko Chang-Hyeon's deep free kick from the right found the unmarked Park Sung-Ho who cooly volleyed Daejeon ahead. It was a very nice finish but Busan will feel they could have defended it much better.

Busan were given no respite as Citizen piled forward looking for a second. It came on 15 minutes through the creativity of play maker Babel. The Brazilian picked up the ball on the right hand side of the area before cutting inside, beating his man and driving an effort towards goal. The Busan keeper could only parry it, straight into the feet of Park Sung-Ho, who duly grabbed his second of the game.

It was a fine start for Daejeon and one that was fully deserved given their attacking play from the outset. Daejeon could have been forgiven for thinking that the game was over but Busan fired a warning on the stroke of halftime. Poor defending and the inability to clear their lines cost Daejeon as Lee Jung Ho fired home from inside the area. In truth, the defender on the line should have cleared it but instead, he helped divert the ball into the roof of the net.

The goal just before half time gave Busan added momentum heading into the second. They created numerous half-chances that were either well saved by Choi Eun-Song or fired wastefully wide. They were misses that Busan would regret as Citizen top-scorer Ko Chang-Hyeon, another former Busan player, fired his 6th goal of the season on 63 minutes.

A cross from the left was poorly headed away by the Busan defender. Park Sung-Ho tried to bring the ball under control before poking it towards Ko Chang-Hyeon on the right. The winger hit it first time with the outside of his boot to send the ball swerving away from the Busan keeper and into the top left corner of the net. It was a great finish from a man who is attracting much attention from other clubs, namely Suwon. If he keeps scoring goals like that, then Citizen will have a real struggle on their hands to keep him.

Jung Sung Hoon completed the scoring for Busan on 94 minutes when the former Daejeon man tapped home a scrappy effort.

It was a fine win for Daejeon and one that keeps them safely ahead of bottom club Daegu and Ulsan. Indeed, in a close K-League, Daejeon are now just six points off a playoff spot, and with the next three games being played at home, Citizen fans will hope that this win provides a catalyst for a playoff push.

Daejeon Citizen have been handed a home draw against Gyeonghee University in the last 16 of the FA Cup. The draw represents an excellent opportunity for Daejeon to advance to the quarter finals for the first time since 2007, when they went down 2-0 against Busan I'Park.

Daejeon were however knocked out at the first round stage last year against Yonsei University, so safe passage is not a foregone conclusion.

The game will take place at Daejeon World Cup Stadium on July 1st. It is expected to be free of charge.

Report: Daejeon Citizen 4 - 2 Vasco da Gama (Friendly)

by Liam Birch at Daejeon World Cup Stadium

Daejeon produced an outstanding display to see off the challenge of Brazilian visitors Vasco da Gama on Saturday. In front of the largest attendance this season, Daejeon did not disappoint and will have sent the thousands of fans, many of them attending their first game, home happy.

Daejeon signalled their intent by attacking from the outset. In fact, in a largely uneventful first half, Citizen barely looked troubled. The frustration was clear to see from Vasco as Daejeon limited their strikers to several long-range shots that sailed harmlessly over Choi Eun-Song's goal.

Daejeon themselves were finding lots of room down the flanks and expertly exploited the Brazilian's back three despite misplacing almost all of their crosses. Daejeon finally broke the deadlock just before half time. Vasco failed to deal with a high ball lofted deep from midfield and the ball dropped kindly to lone striker Park Sung-Ho. His well placed half volley gave the keeper no chance and ensured that Daejeon would take a one goal lead going into the break.

The second half started as the first ended with Daejeon very much in the ascendancy. The home side doubled their lead on the hour mark as, finally a cross of real quality was met by the head of Kwon Jib who glanced his header beyond the reach of the despairing goalkeeper.

Vasco barely had time to come to terms with the second goal when the third game. Again exploiting the empty space down the flanks, a nice pass picked out Kwon Jib on the edge of the area. The midfielder took a touch before curling a beautiful shot just inside the far post. Daejeon were in dreamland and looked a completely different side to the one that had lost so poorly against Seongnam on Wednesday.

The Brazilians would strike back twice in quick succession however. The first, a penalty, came after a clear foul, and was expertly put away by the Vasco forward. Minutes later, a scrambled effort meant a nervous ending to the game for the Daejeon faithful.

The game was put to rest however by man of the match Kwon Jib, who completed his hat-trick with a well placed effort with just four minutes remaining. Daejeon's Brazilian import Babel, who Vasco would probably do well to sign on this display, played a wonderful pass for the unmarked Kwon Jib to calmly finish off Vasco.

It was a wonderful display from Citizen and will leave their long suffering fans wondering why they cannot produce this kind of performance in the league.

Daejeon Ready for Brazilian Test

Daejeon Citizen have been gearing up to take on former Brazilian champions Vasco da Gama this week by holding a joint 'Meet the Players' fan event. Members of both sides met with the Daejeon public this Thursday evening as a build up to what is sure to be an exciting contest on Saturday.

Meanwhile Daejeon head coach Kim Ho has been entertaining his Brazilian counterpart Dorival Junior in the hope that this friendly game will help forge relations between the two sides.

Both teams had a terrible 2008 with Daejeon finishing just one place above the bottom of the K-League whilst Vasco da Gama were relegated for the first time in the club's history. Daejeon's poor form has continued into this year with Citizen recording just one league victory in ten outings. This friendly however represents an opportunity to record a morale boosting win ahead of the upcoming K-League fixtures in June.
The game kicks off at 7pm. Tickets are available from Daejeon World Cup Stadium and are priced at 15,000 won.

Report: Daejeon Citizen 0 - 2 FC Seoul

by Liam Birch at Daejeon World Cup Stadium

Daejeon Citizen slumped to a miserable home defeat this Saturday at the hands of FC Seoul which leaves them level on points with Daegu and Suwon at the foot of the K-League table.

It is looking increasingly likely that Daejeon will face a very difficult task if they are to improve on last years dismal effort. In ten games this season, Citizen have tasted victory only once and have scored a mere seven goals.

That statistic was never in danger of changing against a well organized Seoul side who look a good bet to challenge for honors this time around. In the blistering heat at Daejeon World Cup stadium, the hosts got off to a bright start. The influential Ko Chang Hyeon was back after suspension but other than that, Daejeon kept faith with the side that lost 1-0 at Jeju. That meant a starting place for the awful Park Sung-Ho, who after today's performance, must be at an all time low.

It was Park who helped create the first clear cut chance however. His awkward style bothered the Seoul defence and his jab-pass left created a great chance for Lee Gyeong Hwan, whose effort was saved well by the Seoul keeper. In truth, had he hit it anywhere but straight at the goalkeeper, Daejeon would have led. As it was, it was Seoul who were finding too much space down the Daejeon left, putting numerous dangerous balls into the box. It was no suprise then that the opening goal came from there. The Seoul forward skinned the Daejeon left back before being cynically brought down in the area. It was a stonewall penalty and there can be no complaints. Choi Eun-Song almost saved the resulting penalty but Dejan hit it low and hard to give the capital side a deserved lead.

After the break, Daejeon created numerous chances but not until the game was settled in excellent fashion by the brilliant Dejan. He picked the ball up on the Daejeon left before drilling an unstoppable effort into the bottom right corner on the hour mark. After that, Daejeon toiled hard but terrible finishing ensured that was the end of the scoring.

Park Sung Ho in particular must take much criticism for his glaring miss. Through on goal, he hesitated, allowing the Seoul defender to get back. Still, he managed to beat his man before, with the goal at his mercy, skying the ball way over the bar. It was an unbelievable miss, even from a man that has made that his forte. Later, Ko Chang Hyeon fired a vicious shot that the substitute Seoul keeper did well to turn over the bar.

Daejeon now have a month before their next K-League fixture and must be happy that the break has come. There are severe rumblings about the future of coach Kim Ho and this could further destabilize the club. If only we could play Daegu every week.....

Chi Chi leaves Daejeon

by Liam Birch

Daejeon Citizen today confirmed that Brazilian forward Chi Chi has had his contract terminated by mutual consent. The striker, who scored just one goal in eleven appearances for Daejeon, played his last game for Citizen in the 2-0 Peace Cup victory over Daegu, ironically the game in which he scored his only goal for the club.

The news has helped intensify speculation that Daejeon have already made a move for former fan favourite Adriano Shuva.

Report: Jeju Utd 1 - 0 Daejeon Citizen

by Liam Birch at Jeju World Cup Stadium

A moment of excellence, the woodwork and a controversial decision culminated in a 1-0 loss for Daejeon Citizen on a blustery afternoon in Seogwipo.

The visitors, without the injured ChiChi and suspended Ko Chang Hyeun, started brightly, aiming to test a Jeju defense that had conceded five goals in their last home league outing. The hosts looked vulnerable, particularly when attacked from the wing. However, Daejeon , playing Park Sung-Ho as the lone striker rarely threatened in the opening exchanges. That being said, they controlled the first twenty minutes, limiting Jeju to the occasional mazy runs of the Brazilian Jobson.

Chances for both sides were few and far between, with neither goalkeeper seeing much of the action. One notable effort came from Citizen midfielder Kwon Jib who saw his rasping half-volley of thirty yards saved well by the Jeju keeper. The decisive goal came soon after. As the Daejeon defence continued to back off, Kim Young-Shin fired a precise drive from the edge of the area, through the legs of two defenders before nestling into the bottom right hand corner of Choi Eun-Song's goal. It was an excellent effort in a game devoid of any real quality from either team.

The second half started in much the same manner as the first ended, with neither side creating any real chances, bar a moment of brilliance from man of the match Babel. The Brazilian picked up the ball midway inside the Jeju half, took on three defenders before curling his shot against the upright. It was a moment of pure quality that the game was severely lacking in.

The turning point of the game came around the hour mark as Daejeon were denied what seemed to be a legitimate goal. A deep cross was headed on by the Daejeon attacker which the Jeju defender attempted to clear. His header looped up in the air however, and was subsequently converted for what seemed like an excellent equalizer. Unbelievably, the linesman, forgetting the basic rules of the game, called the goal offside. Daejeon players surrounded the referee in protest at the injustice to no avail. It was an outrageous decision and one that Daejeon would not come back from.

From then on out it was Jeju that looked the more likely. Their wingers were finding too much space down the flanks as Citizen pushed forward for an equalizer. Luckily for Daejeon, Jeju failed to convert numerous decent crosses that exposed the Daejeon back four. Towards the end, Choi Eun-Song made an excellent save from long range, pushing the effort around the post as Citizen tired. He again came to the rescue later in the game, this time tipping a vicious effort over the bar.

In all, a draw would have been a fair result, however Daejeon paid the price for adopting an overly defensive approach. The defensive frailties were again evident and a decisive finisher must be a priority for Kim Ho if he is given funds in the summer.

Report: Daejeon Citizen 2 - 0 Daegu (Peace Cup)

by Liam Birch at Daejeon World Cup Stadium

Daejeon Citizen won comfortably over a poor Daegu side on a sunny afternoon at the Purple Arena. This was an important win that catapulted Daejeon from the foot of their Peace Cup group to within touching distance of qualification. A win in the final fixture against Seongnam will see Daejeon through to the second round.

Things got off to a bright start for both sides with the game constantly shifting back and forth. Daejeon twice went close in the early going, with Ko Chang-Hyeon firing twice into the side netting from an unfavourable angle. Babel was deployed in a more attacking role and revelled in the added freedom. His link up play between the midfield and attack was causing Daegu problems.

Both Babel and Ko Chang-Hyeon were instrumental in the first goal. It was the Brazilian who found Ko on the right, who's cross was blocked by the Daegu defender to concede the corner. Ko's corner was initially blocked by the Daegu defence before ricocheting in off Chi Chi. It was the Brazilian forward's first goal for Daejeon, albeit in rather fortunate circumstances.

Whilst Daejeon led, Daegu were still looking mildly threatening on the counter. In particular the pace and skill of Emile Mbamba, Daegu's new Cameroonian import were causing problems. Indeed Mbamba saw a curling effort from outside the area strike the bottom right side of Choi Eun-Song's goal.

However, Daegu's hopes for a comeback were all but gone after a rash challenge resulted in a red card for the Daegu defender. It was a rash challenge and he can have no complaints about the referee's decision.

Daejeon goalscorer Chi Chi then went down under another heavy challenge. The Daegu player escaped punishment but Chi Chi was unable to continue and was to be replaced by Park Sung-Ho. The striker was dropped to the bench for this game but he staked his claim for a starting place soon after.

Park found himself in the box at a tight angle with a defender on his shoulder. He somehow turned and hit a beautifully placed shot that rolled over the line after striking the post on the left. His celebration was interesting to say the least, as he pretended to fire on the Daejeon fans. Perhaps this was a message to those (myself included) who had given him so much stick last year.

From then on out Citizen easily saw out the rest of the game. This was by no means an impressive performance, but Daejeon did what they had to do. The midfield in particular looked much stronger than of late. Regardless, they now find themselves with their fate in their own hands against Seongnam next time out.

Report: Daejeon Citizen 0 - 0 Pohang Steelers

by Liam Birch

Just over 4000 fans watched a drab affair as 2007 champions Pohang held Daejeon to a goalless draw at Daejeon World Cup Stadium on Friday evening.

This match saw the return of former Daejeon legend Denilson who left Citizen at the end of the 2007 campaign. Luckily for Daejeon, he looks a shadow of his former self, and at 33 years of age, is arguably entering the later stages of his career.

As the scoreline suggests, there were few moments of note. Ko Chang Hyeon was behind just about every Daejeon attacking move and is surely knocking on the door of the National team based on his recent performances. He almost connected with a trademark free kick around the quarter hour mark, however his effort just sailed past the post and into the sizeable Pohang following behind the goal.

Pohang too had little attacking prowess and in truth, will be pleased that they escaped with a draw. Had Daejeon been more aggressive, it may well have been a different story. Still, a precious point for Daejeon who move up to 11th position.

Daejeon MOTM: Ko Chang Hyeon.

Daejeon Sources: Chuva Signs for Citizen

Various sources within the club are claiming that K-League top scorer and former Daejeon favourite Adriano Chuva has agreed to rejoin Citizen. Sources claim that out of favour striker Eric Obinna will have his contract terminated by mutual consent to allow for the arrival of the Brazilian forward. Any move for Chuva however would presumably have to be put on hold until the summer transfer window opens.

Chuva, who will be most remembered by Citizen fans as the man who scored the winner against Suwon to seal a play-off place, moved to Chunnam from Daejeon at the end of the 2007 season. He currently tops the K-League goal chart with 6 goals from 5 starts.

Report: Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors 4 - 2 Daejeon Citizen

by Liam Birch at Jeonju World Cup Stadium

Daejeon slumped to a dismal defeat in Jeonju this past Sunday afternoon after a rampant second half display from the hosts. It wasn't the result that was particularly surprising but more so the manner in which it came about. Manager Kim Ho will surely be having nightmares following a dire second half defensive performance from Citizen.

Daejeon lined up with Chi Chi playing the lone striker role, with last season's leading scorer Park Sung-Ho again out on the left wing. Ko Chang-Hyeon had recovered enough to claim a starting place whilst Babel was again deployed just behind the midfield quartet.

Both sides made a bright start, with some particularly poor refereeing decisions going against Daejeon. However, ominous signs were evident from the outset, with Jeonbuk's counter attacking pace causing all sorts of problems in the Daejeon defence. On 18 minutes, Edinho secured a free kick on the edge of the area that he sublimely tucked away to give Jeonbuk the lead.

Daejeon battled away for the remainder of the half with very little end product. Chi Chi in particular was guilty of two glaring misses. The first, a free header that he directed harmlessly over the bar, and the second where, with a clear sight on goal, he tamely shot straight at the goalkeeper.

Whatever plan Kim Ho had for the second half was blown completely out of the water by a quick double just after the restart. An excellent Edinho cross left Tae-uk with a tap in before former Middlesboro flop Lee Don-Gook excellently volleyed in from the edge of the area. In truth, it was terrible defending for both goals and a worrying sign for things to come.

Daejeon were thrown a lifeline midway through the half when a defensive mishap from Jeonbuk allowed Park Sung-Ho to calmly fire Daejeon back into the match. Any hope of a comeback was short lived however as the excellent Edinho crossed inch perfectly onto the head of Luis to restore Jeonbuk's three goal cushion.

Daejeon would score a conselation goal when Ko Chang-Hyeon fired a trademark free kick over the Jeonbuk wall and into the top left hand corner on 90 minutes.

In all, it was a terribly poor performance and the 4-2 scoreline really flatters Daejeon. Jeonbuk look a decent side and could well be a safe bet for a playoff position. Daejeon on the other hand must have rather more modest goals for the season, as a basement battle looks more and more likely by the week.

Preview: Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors vs Daejeon Citizen

26th April 2009
Jeonju World Cup Stadium
3.00pm

High flying Jeonbuk host Daejeon Citizen this Sunday in a game that they will feel confident of taking 3 points from. Jeonbuk have made an excellent start to the season as they find themselves just 2 points off early pace-setters Gwangju Sangmu. Daejeon on the other hand have had a mixed start to the season. After a heavy loss on opening day, they have shown glimpses of form, particularly in the 2-0 victory over Daegu. They currently find themselves in 10th position in the K-League.

Jeonbuk come into this game on the back of a credible 1-1 draw with 2007 champions Pohang, whilst Daejeon suffered an unlucky 2-1 reverse at the hands of Seongnam. Jeonbuk are unbeaten in 2009 whilst Daejeon Citizen have recorded just the one league victory this year. No surprises then that Jeonbuk are the clear favourites with the bookmakers. Bet365.com have a Jeonbuk win priced at 3/5 whilst Daejeon are priced at 17/5.

Daejeon suffered a 3-1 reverse here last season. Park Sung-Ho missed a first half penalty for Daejeon and Jeonbuk made them pay with a ruthless 2nd half display.

Match report and photographs to follow on Monday.

Preview: Gangwon FC vs Daejeon Citizen

In my excitement it appears that I completely forgot about the Peace Cup game tonight where Daejeon Citizen will travel to league new boys Gangwon hoping to build on the 2-1 victory over Chunnam last time out in this competition.

The Peace Cup (or Hauzen Cup as it was previously known) is the Mickey Mouse competition of Korea, where teams will rarely play their strongest eleven. I have often said that Daejeon should attempt to take this competition seriously as it presents a viable opportunity for silverware.

I expect to see a full strength side tonight, so that should mean Brazilian imports Chi Chi and Babel starting. The one player that may be rested is Ko Chang Hyeun, who was substituted with a minor knock during the 2-1 defeat by Seongnam on Saturday.

Kick off is 7pm in Gangwon.
Welcome to my Daejeon Citizen blog.

I shall endeavor to update frequently with news and personal match reports written by yours truly. Look out for my preview of this weekend's clash with Jeonbuk soon.
